Deacon Michael " Big Mike" Goings Obituary

Michael Dewayne Goings, affectionately known as "Big Mike," passed away peacefully at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma on February 27, 2024. Born on June 21, 1964, at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. He was a beacon of love and joy in the lives of all who knew him. He confessed Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church on Kings Bend Road in Selma, Alabama. His spiritual journey later led him to join Gospel Tabernacle COGIC, Selma, Alabama where he became an ordained deacon, serving his church with devotion and fervor. Big Mike was a proud graduate of Southside High School's Class of 1982 and furthered his education at Wallace Community College-Selma and Draughons College in Montgomery, Alabama. His dedication to serving others was exemplified through his commendable 25-year tenure as a Sergeant with the Dallas County Sheriff's Department. After retiring from the Sheriff Department, he continued his commitment to the community by joining the Selma City Police Department as an Officer and the Selma Housing Authority as an Investigator for two years. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through his ownership of Living Lawn Service, among other ventures. Big Mike's love for life was contagious. He was an avid Alabama Football fan and his passion for the game was only matched by his love for cooking. He was known for his delicious meals, which were often shared with family and friends during lively gatherings. His selfless nature was evident in the way he loved on his family and his tireless service to his community, always putting the needs of others before his own! His infectious humor and loving personality will be cherished in the memories of his beloved wife, Ghytana "Gee-Gee" Goings, five children: Martina Goings, TyDorrian Gibbs, Khamari Gibbs, JaMichael "Jay" Goings, and Maleeyah Goings. Big Mike leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will be fondly remembered by his siblings: Vivian Goings, Sarah (Sheldon) Witherspoon, Willie Lee Hardy, and John (Aldoisy) Goings. His special nephew, Michael Durell Goings, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends, will hold dear the memories of his generous spirit. Preceding him in death are his parents, Ovella Sr. and Bessie Goings, and his siblings: Eva Lois Crum, John D. Goings, Lewis E. Goings, Ovella King Dock Goings, Jr., Ann Carol Goings Moore, Robert Crum, Sr., Judy Crum, and Betty Carter. They have now welcomed him into eternal rest with open arms. Big Mike's life was a testament to the virtues of love, humor, and selflessness. He made an indelible impact on his community, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will forever guide us, like a beacon of warmth and kindness.
