Cecil Frederick Griffin, 70, of Tuscaloosa, AL passed away on August 8, 2025,
Circumstances (e.g. surrounded by loving family).
Cecil was born October 16, 1954 in Marion, Alabama, the fourth and youngest
child of Henry and Ora Jane (Sanders) Griffin. He was baptized at an early age at
Berean Baptist Church. In 1973, Cecil graduated from Francis Marion High School,
where he played the tenor sax in the band and then later played basketball.
While in high school, his friend Joe Hogue would call him Krypton, which eventually
morphed into the nickname "Grip Dog."
Cecil worked as master Brick Mason. When he was 11 years old, he learned the
trade from his father and oldest brother. Over the next 51 years, he worked in
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Virginia. He retired at 62 in Tuscaloosa.
Cecil especially loved having fun, never meeting a stranger. Remaining to cherish Cecil’s
memory are his children Vanessa Taliferro of Chicago, Illinois, Calvin (Jennifer) Griffin of
Birmingham, Alabama, Lashonda Gordon of Akron, Alabama, Carlos Griffin, Sr. of
Prattville, Alabama and Shayla Griffin of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; grandchildren Ashley
Taliferro, Kendra Crews, Danyon Griffin, Jamisha (Jeremiah) Cattlin, Christopher Jackson,
Carlos (Michaela)Griffin Jr, Calea Griffin, Cayden Griffin, Sh'Jorian Johnson and Zavien
Brown; sister Marjorie (Willie)Graham of Miami, Florida; 8 great-grandchildren, numerous
nieces and nephews; and special friend Doris Lewis.
Preceding Cecil in death are his parents Henry and Ora Jane Griffin; brothers Ralph
(Augusta) Griffin and James Griffin; grandson Tyler Griffin, and Son-in-law Minister
Michael Gordon.
