Katherine Phillips, a beacon of love and strength, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2023, at Southland Nursing Home. Born on January 29, 1941, in Hale County, Alabama, Katherine was a cherished daughter to the late Eugene and Corine Dunn Frank. Her life was a testament to her unwavering faith, love for her family, and dedication to her community.
A woman of deep faith, Katherine accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church. Later, she joined Hopewell Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her health declined. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her actions and the way she lived her life, always striving to reflect God's love.
Katherine's passion for life was not limited to her family and church. She was a woman of many talents and interests. Known for her exceptional culinary skills, she found joy in cooking and entertaining at her home. Friends and family alike were often drawn to Katherine's home by the aroma of her delicious meals and the warmth of her hospitality.
Katherine's journey began with her siblings, Mary White, Ethel Lapsley, Rosie Parker, Ruby Allen, Ellis Thomas, Eugene Frank, Albert Frank, and Robert Frank, all of whom preceded her in death. Despite the loss of her siblings, Katherine's spirit remained resilient, and she found joy in the love of her family.
Katherine's life was enriched by love when she married William Lapsley. From this union, they were blessed with a daughter, Barbara Lapsley, who became the apple of her eye. Katherine's heart grew even larger when she later married Charles Phillips, embracing his children as her own. Her blended family included stepchildren Gladys Lapsley, Ollie Payton, Queen (Eddie) Kynard, Lou McGrider, Vera Jones, Clarence Phillips, and Cedric Phillips. Each of them brought additional joy and purpose to her life.
As a matriarch, Katherine is survived by her devoted loving daughter Barbara (Blane) Tindull, and her grandchildren, Katrina (Demetrius) Travis, Bernard Childs, Tavares (LaToya) Childs, and Blane (Chelsea) Tindull. Her love extended to her great-grandchildren, JaMichael Shaw, Kenneth Billingsley, A'Kavelyn Harris, Javelon Sanders, Nardia Childs, Jamerica Stiles, Xavier Holland, Layla Childs, Shamiya Jackson, and Tavares Childs. Katherine was also blessed to see the birth of her great-great-grandchildren, Rashaad Shaw, JaKyria Shaw, Dailyn Shaw, and Greyson Shaw, who added a new dimension of happiness to her life, her sister, Bessie Edwards, and a host of other relatives and friends all of whom will continue to honor Katherine's legacy with fond memories and love.
