Lucian Smith was born June 8, 1924 in Selma Alabama. Her parents are the late Ceola and Hawk Gooden. To this union Christopher Smith and Lucian Smith blessed their parents. Lucy, as she was affectionately called departed this life on March 29, 2021 after a short illness at Noland Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her brother Christopher.
Lucy received her education in the Selma City School System and graduated from Knox Academy on May 31, 1946. Later in life Lucy furthered her education by becoming a trained Nurses Guild where she proudly received her Pin. Lucy had a servant heart and tirelessly and unselfishly dedicated herself as a caregiver and advisor for many family members, friends, neighbors and beyond.
Lucy worked in the family business—farming and gardening as well as planting and growing beautiful flowers. She also worked at Hammermill Nursery for several years as a seedliner—moving small trees from a conveyor belt in preparation for planting. Lucy was a self-taught family Horticulturist. She enjoyed cooking various dishes including wild game, quilting, fishing, canning fruits and vegetables, and baking cakes. She was one the best cooks around. Mom also made a variety of delicious pies (from recipes in her head) and could turn up the best homemade ice cream. The family, from the youngest to the oldest, enjoyed talking to her about our family tree and getting nuggets related to other life living experiences. Mom was an oral historian; a library has departed us!
Mom was raised in a loving Christian home and accepted Christ at an early age. She joined Sandridge Baptist Church, Selma, AL under the pastorate of Reverend Napoleon Smith. Her grandparents, Butler and Delphia Smith, had a great influence on her family and spiritual life, as they were firm believers and followers of Christ. She served faithfully as the church secretary for over 60 years under the administration of Reverend Napolean Smith, Reverend C. S. Shorts, Pastor T. A. Hunter, and Pastor Milton E. Brown. She retired under the leadership of Pastor Milton E. Brown after years of dedicated service. Mom was a faithful member until early 2020 when church services were suspended due to a COVID outbreak. She continued to attend church via conference call under the pastorate of Pastor-Elect Willie Johnson until her passing.
