Vannie Newton Obituary

A native of Indianola, Mississippi Vannie Pearl Dunning was born a twin to Fate Earl on April 26, 1923 to the late Molian and Hattie Dunning.  She was a sister to Pauline Olds and Robert Dunning.  She departed this life on September 20, 2020 peacefully at home.

She met John Marshall Stallens, Sr. in the early 1940’s.  Mr. Stallens died in July 1948 due to complications from a work related accident.  To this union she had three children. John, Jr. was four years old Barbara Ann who was 2 years old and she was 7 months pregnant with Larry when Mr. Stallens died.

She met Ercel Newton and they married in 1950.  To this union four children was born; Evida, Treva Elaine, Pamela Yevette and Wendell Newton AKA (Yogi the Bear).

Vannie Newton was an excellent cook on Kappa Avenue all the neighborhood kids would come and eat at her table.  If you came into her house you had to eat.

She joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J. A.  Salary.  Rev. Michael Newton took over leadership after Rev. Salary died.  Her favorite song was “Lord I am willing to run all the way” She remained a faithful member until her health declined.

To  celebrate her life four daughters, Barbara Ann Stallens McCray,  Evida Newsome, Treva Elaine Hardaway, and Pamela Yevette Trotter; one son, Wendell Carl Newton ; Grandsons, John Stallens, III, Charles McCray, Jr. Reginald Pegues, Corey Stewart, and Larry Stallens; Granddaughters, Stephanie McCray, Bridget Hardaway, Sharya Aaron, Antonia Dudley, Christa Hardaway, Brandi Givan, Travae Griffith, Joy Ming Newsome, Daphne Stewart and Erica Pegues; 27 Great Grands; three special sons, Mr. Tony Ricks, Mr. Keith McIntosh, Mr. Derry Howard; a special daughter-in-law Leola Meek Stallens; a special daughter Jamerle Brown; a son-in-law Mr. Michael Hardaway, Special brother –in-law Eddie Alexander and special sister- in -law Mary Alice Bell and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
