Willie James Benjamin, affectionately known as “Putt,” never met a stranger. He was a beloved presence in his community, known for his warm smile, generous spirit, and the way he treated everyone with respect, no matter their status. A hardworking man to his core, Willie spent his life laboring with purpose and pride. He was never one to sit still, always ready to lend a hand, fix what was broken, or do what needed to be done. His strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and quiet humility were a testament to his character. Whether you knew him for a moment or a lifetime, Willie made you feel seen and valued. His kind heart and loyal nature left an imprint on everyone he encountered, and he will be deeply missed.
Willie was born on November 19, 1955, in Marion, Alabama, to the late Mr. Walter Benjamin and Mrs. Julia Foster Benjamin. He confessed his life to Christ at an early age and joined Hopewell Baptist Church in Marion, AL. Later in life, he became a faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where he remained spiritually rooted until his passing.
Willie was preceded in death by his two brothers, Walter Benjamin Jr. and Henry Lewis Benjamin; the mother of his children, Janice Thomas; and his stepson, Tyrone Isiah Green. He completed the final mile of his earthly journey on May 29, 2025, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.
Willie leaves behind to cherish his memory his children: Keanna Thomas and Ja’Maya Benjamin, both of Tuscaloosa, AL; his son, Lazerick Benjamin of Northport, AL; and his stepdaughter, Ashley Thomas of Northport, AL. He also leaves behind three step-granddaughters of Marion, AL, and Birmingham, AL.
He is survived by his loving twin sister, LouJean (MackArthor) Jackson, and his brother, Jerry Benjamin, both of Marion, AL, along with a host of caring nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and dear friends. Among those especially close to him were his devoted niece, Julie Mae (Curtis) Benjamin Green — lovingly known as “Sister”; his lifelong best friends, Willie Jackson and Carl Martin; and his close cousins, James Hogue and Steve Cureton.
Willie’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and loyalty. He showed up for people when they needed him most and never asked for recognition in return. Though his physical presence is gone, the lessons he taught and the love he gave will live on in all who knew him.
